BROOKLYN WALL OF REMEMBRANCE

Maimonides Park | CONEY ISLAND, NY | 2003

CONCEPT

New York City’s first memorial to 9/11

Shortly after 9/11 Brooklyn-born Sol Moglen came to then NYC Mayor Rudi Giuliani to ask about creating a memorial in Brooklyn to ensure Brooklyn's firefighters were honored for their losses.

Located just outside Maimonides Park, the Brooklyn Wall of Remembrance, completed and dedicated in 2003, stands as a solemn tribute to the courageous responders who sacrificed their lives to protect others on September 11th, 2001. The memorial features three 30-by-12-foot granite panels, each etched with the faces of the 346 firefighters, 37 Port Authority officers, 23 NYPD officers, 3 New York State officers, 1 fire patrol member, other first responders, and Sirius—the loyal K-9 rescue dog—who all perished in the line of duty.
